BACKGROUND: Link.

PERSONALITY:

Early in the show, when Asami was first introduced, Korra described her (albeit disparagingly) as a “prissy, beautiful, elegant rich girl,” and that’s almost exactly how Asami comes across on the surface. As the daughter of famous inventor and Future Industries CEO Hiroshi Sato, Asami was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Because of this upper class upbringing, she cuts a very elegant and glamorous figure, punctuated by her chic and feminine style. She always seems to show up everywhere looking stylish, and she’s never seen without makeup—or even a hair out of place. With this apparent elegance comes a very self-confident, self-possessed young woman.

However, her upbringing never made her vain or arrogant; on the contrary, she’s very self-confident without being overly so. She almost never shows any insecurity in who she is or how she looks, but she’s definitely not prissy, in spite of her girly appearance. When Korra teases her about taking them shopping, for example, Asami instead takes everyone to the track so they can race Satomobiles.

She also shows a lot of humility; she’s always polite and friendly to everyone she meets, regardless of their class. And in the scene that introduces her, she apologizes profusely to Mako for hitting him with her moped, even calling herself an idiot for not paying attention to where she was going.

Her humility also gives her a very compassionate and generous spirit, evidenced when she convinces her father to sponsor the Fire Ferrets, before they’re kicked out of the tournament; when she lets Mako and Bolin stay with her at the Sato estate after their home in the arena is damaged; and again when she lets their family stay with her after Ba Sing Se is destroyed. Her attitude seems to be that since she has the means to help, why wouldn’t she? She’s kind and quick to help anyone in need, especially if they’re her friends.

This compassionate side of her makes her a very caring and sensitive friend; Korra relies on Asami the most while she’s recovering from her battle with Zaheer. Asami often shows her kindness in small ways, such as asking people how they’re feeling or to tell her what’s wrong.

Along with her sensitivity comes a great capacity for forgiveness. With Korra, for example, Asami never shows resentment or holds a grudge against her, even though Korra is the “other woman” in her relationship with Mako. She also comes to forgive Mako for what he did to her, and makes the first attempt towards becoming friends again in spite of the fact that he still acts awkwardly around her. Finally, though it takes her years to work through her anger towards him, she ends up forgiving her father for betraying her, and buries the hatchet so they can work together to stop Kuvira.

While she is even-tempered and generally very slow to anger, there have been a few times in which she’s lost her patience. When she shows her anger, she tends to become snappish and curt, though she doesn’t usually hang onto her anger past the argument. Otherwise, she usually keeps a cool head during confrontations, while still holding her ground.

She’s very aware of how people perceive her because of her background, even though she doesn’t believe it fits her; as she says to Korra, “People usually assume I’m daddy’s helpless little girl, but I can handle myself.” Along with that silver spoon, Asami grew up knowing that she would follow in her father’s footsteps and take over Future Industries one day. This goal has made her determined and a very hard worker; after her father is jailed and she becomes CEO of Future Industries, she does everything in her power to keep her company from going under, in spite of the odds against her. She’s very passionate about her work, and she takes pride in what she does.

And when she says she can handle herself, she means it. She’s very capable and cool under pressure, whether they’re physical confrontations or not. With her hand-to-hand training, she can take care of herself during a fight, and with her level-headedness and resourcefulness, she can take care of herself otherwise too. For instance, she has enough engineering knowledge from Future Industries to build a working sand sailer from scrap airship parts, as well as the ingenuity to come up with the idea in the first place. She’s also calm and resourceful enough to break her and Korra out of captivity under Kuvira’s forces almost single-handedly, even if they ended up crashing an airship in the end.

As generally the most diplomatic member of Team Korra, she sometimes has to talk them out of bad situations, though she’s not above being a little underhanded to do it, such as when she lied to the Earth Queen about repairs to their airship in order to buy them more time in Ba Sing Se. She also manages to convince a guard holding her and Korra captive into cuffing her to a different handrail, making it easier for her to escape.

Along with these skills, Asami has the backbone to stand up for herself, her friends, and what she believes is right. Her strong character is especially evident when her father reveals himself to be an Equalist; she believes so strongly that what he’s doing is wrong that she helps Team Avatar to fight against him and the Equalists, despite the fact that he’s the only family she has left.

With her strength comes a strong sense of independence; throughout the series, she rarely asks anybody for help, and she’s more than ready to take care of her problems herself. She doesn’t like to dwell on her issues when she has the ability to fix them instead.

This doesn’t mean she isn’t without her vulnerabilities, or that she doesn’t let them show. Despite knowing Mako a short time, she opens up to him about her mother when he tells her about his parents. During the second season, when she’s on the verge of losing her company, she turns to Mako for help, and eventually rekindles her romance with him despite the fact that he’s hurt her before.

In spite of her missteps in her relationship with Mako, she’s otherwise very cool about romance. She was the proactive one with Mako, asking him out on a date after knowing him for only a minute or two (though, to be fair, she did hit him with her moped), and even paying for everything. She’s very affectionate with him, and it’s obvious that she doesn’t mind being the one to foot the bill; she seems to enjoy taking care of him, to go along with her kind nature.

Asami also has a mischievous side; when Mako mentions that she didn’t exactly ask her father if he and Bolin could stay at the Sato estate, Asami says, “it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.” She has her playful moments, as well as a mile-wide adventurous streak; she enjoys racing cars and flying airplanes, and isn’t afraid to take a few risks. As she tells Korra, “you can’t be afraid to mix it up sometimes.”

ABILITIES: Unlike the other members of Team Avatar, Asami doesn’t have any bending. However, she makes up for it with a variety of other skills; while there’s nothing supernatural about her abilities, she shows great proficiency with the following skills:

• Hand-to-hand combat — Her father had her trained in self-defense from a young age, so that she would always be able to protect herself. As a result, she’s an expert in martial arts and hand-to-hand combat, enough to hold her own against benders and non-benders alike. In the first season, she picked up an electrified glove from the Equalists, which she’s been using ever since to supplement her hand-to-hand skills.

• Driving — As the unofficial chauffer for Team Avatar, Asami is an expert driver, thanks to her experience behind the wheel of Future Industries’ many inventions. She’s comfortable driving (or flying, as the case may be) a wide variety of vehicles, including Satomobiles, motorcycles, motorboats, airplanes, and airships, and she’s also shown operating sand sailers, forklifts, and mecha tanks, among others.

• Engineering knowledge — Because of her experience working with her father and eventually running Future Industries herself, Asami has expert level knowledge of engineering; her mechanical engineering skills are enough to build a fully functioning sand sailer out of parts from a crashed airship.
